There are so many different companies with so much invested in the future of web technology that it's hard for any one group (even the WHATWG) to step up and take the reigns. Even if HTML 5 continues to stay on the upward trend it has over the past few weeks/months, there's still a long way to go in terms of creating a standards-based web. What I got from reading this was that the web is really a mess at the moment. There are so many different companies with so much invested in the future of web technology that it’s hard for any one group (even the WHATWG) to step up and take the reigns.

Even if HTML 5 continues to stay on the upward trend it has over the past few weeks/months, there’s still a long way to go in terms of creating a standards-based web.
